This Policy Briefing by Stephen Thompson, Brigitte Rohwerder and Clement Arockiasamy, draws on research which explored explores how intersecting identities in India (faith, class, gender, disability), influence the experience of inequality and marginalisation, with a particular focus on people with disabilities from minority religious backgrounds.
It outlines how identity markers such as religion, caste and gender can exacerbate the exclusion already experienced by people with disabilities and recommends taking deliberate steps to strengthen the social inclusion of people living with a disability who also come from minority religious groups and socioeconomically marginalised backgrounds to help them fulfil their potential to fully and effectively participle in society on an equal basis with others, and strengthen community ties, making the society in which they live more inclusive.
